2018. január 14. 18:23 - Filmturista

Sets of classical Hungarian movies in countries nearby – TOP 10 and more locations!

There are several decades of tradition in Hungarian film history that certain sets are recorded abroad. It is not surprising as filmmaking has been an international and universal language since its birth. Budapest and Hungary speak this language well that is how it could become a popular international filming destination. This process also exists to the other direction. In this compilation we are introducing locations of such Hungarian, classical films where certain scenes of the story point beyond the borders of the country. We are going to wander in nearby European landscapes that are familiar to many, have a reference to Hungary and all this with a film tourism approach. Great travel tips!

Erdély (Románia) - Csíksomlyó - Kegytemplom - Emberek a havason (1942) Szőts István korszakalkotó filmje, amely expresszív, formabontó alkotás. A későbbiekben emigrált rendező művét, a neorealizmus előfutárának tekintik. A film jelentős hatást gyakorolt a nagy olasz rendező generációra. A szegény favágó sorsát végigkísérő cselekmény nagy része Erdélyben valós helyszíneken, a hegyekben játszódik. Néhány jelenetre Kolozsvár is feltűnik a filmben.

Transylvania (Romania) - Csíksomlyó - Pilgrimage Church - Emberek a havason (1942) the epoch-making film of István Szőts is an expressive, groundbreaking work. The film of the director, who later emigrated, is deemed to be the forerunner of neorealism. The film had a significant impact on the great Italian director generation. The majority of the plot following the fate of a poor lumberjack is set in Transylvania in real locations in the mountains. In a few scenes Kolozsvár is also featured in the film. Getting closer to the dramatic ending the Church of Csíksomlyó also appears, where Gergő Csutak (János Görbe) goes in for a moving prayer. The Transylvanian landscape is unique in the film.

Felvidék (Szlovákia) - Alsókomárnok – Szindbád (1971) Huszárik Zoltán lírai, epikus filmje, az álmodozó folyvást bolyongó Szindbáddal mára a magyar filmtörténet egyik jelképévé vált. A rendező a film legtöbb jelenetéhez a felvidéki Szepesség területén talált színhelyeket. A környéken lévő további görögkatolikus gótikus stílusú fatemplomok, a világörökségi listán szerepelnek.

Historical Hungarian Highlands (Slovakia) - Alsókomárnok – Szindbád (1971) Zoltán Huszárik’s lyric, epic film with the daydreaming, always wandering Szindbád has become one of the symbols of Hungarian film history. The director found locations for most scenes in the film in the area called Szepesség located in the Historical Hungarian Highlands. The characteristic domes of the church in Alsókomárnok highlight the beauty of the location. The church built in 1938 holds an 18th century iconostasis originating from Tőketerebes. The other Greek catholic, gothic churches located in the area are listed among the World Heritage Sites.

Felvidék (Szlovákia) - Vöröskő – Egy magyar nábob (1966) Egy Jókai regény, aminek a megfilmesítése óriási közönségsiker lett. A film készítése egybeesik a magyar filmtörténet egyik aranykorával, így a rendező Várkonyi Zoltán szabadkezet kapott, hogy minél eredetibb környezetben találja meg a forgatási helyszínmotívumokat. Az akkori Csehszlovákiában, a Felvidéken forgatták a történetben szereplő Kárpáthy-birtokhoz a korhű belső helyszínt. Az impozáns vöröskői vár műemlék, egész évben várja látogatóit.

Historical Hungarian Highlands (Slovakia) - Vöröskő – Egy magyar nábob (1966) A novel written by Jókai and the film made from the novel has become a huge box-office success. The making of the film coincides with one of the golden ages of Hungarian filmmaking, thus the director, Zoltán Várkonyi was given a free hand to find the shooting location motives in the most original environment as much as possible. The location that was historically accurate for the Kárpáthy estate used in the story was shot in Czechoslovakia at that time in the Historical Hungarian Highlands. The magnificent historical monument awaits visitors throughout the whole year.

Kazán-szoros (Románia és Szerbia) – Aranyember (1962) Jókai Mórnak ebből a regényéből több filmváltozat is készült. Az 1962-es feldolgozás Gertler Viktor romantikus, színes vadregényes kalandfilmje, szépséges tájaival elkápráztatja az embert. A történet elején a Szent Borbála az Al-Dunán hajózik. A magyar hajót, a menekülő török nemessel a fedélzetén, a szultán ágyúnaszádja üldözi. A látványos képsorok hűen a regény cselekményéhez, valós helyszínen játszódnak. A dunai forgatást a Mahart segítette. Érdekesség, hogy a naszádot a filmesek egy makettel helyettesítették, ami aztán köszönhetően a szeles, viharos időjárásnak, kis híján el is süllyedt mielőtt a jelenetet felvették volna.

Kazan Gorge (Romania and Serbia) – Aranyember (1962) More film versions have been made from the novel written by Mór Jókai. The 1962 film adaptation, Viktor Gertler’s romantic, colourful, bucolic adventure film with its magnificent landscapes amazes the viewer. At the beginning of the story the boat called Szent Borbála is travelling on the Lower Danube. The Hungarian boat with the escaping Turkish nobleman onboard is being chased by the gunboat of the Sultan. The spectacular series of images are true to the plot of the novel and set in a real location. The shooting on the Danube was assisted by Mahart (Hungarian Shipping Co.). It is interesting that the gunboat was replaced by a scale model, which then, due to the windy and stormy weather nearly sank before the scene was shot.

Pula (Horvátország) - Amfiteátrum – Redl ezredes (1984) A tengerparti város látképéhez hozzátartozó idegenforgalmi látványosság az Amfiteátrum, méltán népszerű a turisták körében. De nekünk magyaroknak talán még ennél is jobban, hiszen egyik Oscar-díjas rendezőnk, Szabó István filmjében is feltűnik a római korból itt maradt cirkuszi épület homlokzata. A Monarchia idején játszódó filmben a főhőst alakító Klaus Maria Brandauer tűnik fel itt.

Pula (Croatia) - Amphitheatre – Redl ezredes (1984) The tourist attraction Amphitheatre is part of the scenery of the coastal town is deservedly popular with tourists. However, for us, Hungarians it may be even more attractive since the facade of the circus building that remained here from the Roman times is also featured in the film of one of our Oscar-winning film directors, István Szabó. In the film set in the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy the actor playing the hero of the film, Klaus Maria Branduer appears at this location.

Postojna (Szlovénia) - cseppkőbarlang – Sándor Mátyás (1979) A közkedvelt tévéfilmsorozat, anno koprodukcióban készült. A készítők végig arra törekedtek, hogy minél hitelesebben adják vissza, Verne Gyula kalandregényének hangulatát. A sorozat záró epizódjában tűnik fel először a titokzatos Antekirtt doktor szigete, ahol mindent az elektronika vezérel. A jelenetekben hatalmas méretű termek láthatóak, melyek a valóságban a posztojnai barlangrendszerben találhatók. Szlovénia természeti csodái közé tartozó, világhírű cseppkőbarlang, több mint húsz kilométeres hosszúságával, az egyik legnagyobb a világon. Külön érdekesség, hogy a látogatók akár az ideépített barlangvasúton utazva is gyönyörködhetnek a csillogó karsztrendszer képződményeiben. Természetes szépségével lenyűgöző élmény az idelátogatóknak.

Postojna (Slovenia) - Dripstone Cave - Sándor Mátyás (1979) The popular TV series was made in a co-production. The filmmakers throughout the entire film aimed to reflect the atmosphere of the adventure novel of Gyula Verne as authentically as possible. The island of the mysterious Doctor Antekirtt where everything is controlled by electronics appears first in the final episode of the series. In the scenes we can see huge halls which in reality are located in the Postojna cave system. The world famous dripstone cave is among the natural wonders of Slovenia and with its more than 20 km length is one of the biggest of its kind in the world. It is a special curiosity that visitors can even marvel at the formations of the sparkling karst system while travelling on the cave railways built there. The cave with its natural beauty is a fascinating experience for visitors.

Cervena Lhota (Csehország) – Névtelen vár (1981) A máig népszerű többrészes televíziós sorozatban, a fertőszegi kastélyt alakította ez a gyönyörű szép csehországi vár.

Cervena Lhota (Czech Republic) – Névtelen vár (1981) In the television series popular even today the Castle of Fertőszeg was set in this gorgeous castle located in the Czech Republic. Having crossed the elegant stone bridge, the romantic looking castle welcomes its visitors with a rich interior. The building, which is simply nicknamed as the „red castle” after the colour of the castle wall, is one of the most visited castle attractions in the country. This is also owing to the lovely environment that is especially enhanced by the fishpond around the castle. In more episodes of the series we can watch as Count Vavel (Gábor Koncz) and Marie (Vera Pap) are sitting in a boat. The picturesque location had already been featured previously in Gábor Bódy’s film entitled ’Nárcisz és Psyché’.

Tarnów (Lengyelország) – 80 huszár (1978) Sára Sándor huszárfilmje a Lenkey század tragikus sorsán keresztül állít emléket az 1848-as forradalomnak.

Tarnów (Poland) – 80 huszár (1978) Sándor Sára’s hussar film is a tribute to the 1848 Revolution through the tragic fate of the Lenkey military company. The story follows in a dramatic manner the rebellion and patriotism of Hungarian hussars stationed on foreign land. The Hungarian crew shot the crossing of the Carpathian Mountains in the romantic parts and national parks of the Tatra Mountains in Poland and Slovakia. The starting point of the plot is set in a small town in the Habsburg Empire. Tarnów is located in Poland near the Tatras ad the bank of the Biala River. The urban scenes of the film, the humiliation of the hussar private, the evening protest of the Polish citizens sympathizing with the revolution and the latter dispersement of the protesters were all shot next to the townhall at the main square. The arched buildings and the historical atmosphere of the square are also reminders that once a great Hungarian feature film was shot here.

Később a történetben a horvát, mediterrán, tengerparti város Dubrovnik is felbukkan, ahol klasszikus kalandfilmszerű jelenetekben (autósüldőzés, motorcsónakázás) látjuk a mára rendkívül népszerű üdülőhely történelmi óvárosát és annak környékét. Napjainkban a város A Csillagok háborúja és Trónok harca produkcióknak köszönhetően a világ filmturizmusának egyik legfelkapottabb célállomása.

Mostar (Bosnia-Hercegovina) - The Old Bridge - Az Oroszlán ugrani készül (1969) The Hungarian James Bond film that was meant to parody and at the same time distort for the Hungarian residents the work of the intelligence service of the west. Due to the unforgettable acting performance of István Bujtor, with the theme song of the Illés Band and last but not least with the spectacular locations throughout the film became an immediate blockbuster. The majority of the film scenes were shot by the crew in the former Yugoslavia. Therefore, among others the image of the iconic Old Bridge in Mostar is also featured, around which we can see an exciting chase scene. Later in the story the Croatian Mediterranean costal town, Dubrovnik also shows up, where the historical old town and it surroundings that have become extremely popular by now can be seen in the classic adventure film type scenes (car chase, speed boating). Nowadays the city is one of the hottest destinations of the global film tourism thanks to the Star Wars and the Game of Thrones productions.

Belogradchik Fortress (Bulgaria) - Egri csillagok (1968) In the Hungarian historical feature film that may be the most popular one till this day, the scenes referring to the Ottoman Empire were shot in Bulgaria by the crew of director, Zoltán Várkonyi. Not only the colourful street hustle and bustle depicting Istanbul and the external images symbolizing the building of the Yedikule were made on the Bulgarian coast (Balchik, Cape Kaliakra, the old town of Plovdiv...), but also the scenes of the Transylvanian Castle of Gilau were shot here (Baba Vida Fortress). From a film tourism point of view the most interesting and exciting shooting location might be the Fortress of Belogradchik featuring the walls of Adrioanopolis and the entrance of the Yedikule, which is situated at the foot of the Balkan Mountains near the town of Belogradchik. The historical fortress ruins surrounded by huge rocks are one of the best preserved cultural monuments in the country. If you travel around there, you must visit the fortress, because you will be welcomed by impressive scenery.
